Thunder Falls to Mavericks in Series Finale
March 21, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Independence, MO - Wichita started a week-long trip on Tuesday night, falling to Kansas City by the final of 3-1 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
Mark MacMillan tied the game early in the third, but the Mavericks pulled away with a pair of goals in a three-minute span to take the regular season finale.
MacMillan recorded his 19th goal of the year with assists being credited to Ryan Van Stralen and Travis Brown.
After a scoreless first, Wichita had a great chance to take the lead in the second. Greg Betzold was sent off for a high stick. Immediately after, Shawn Pauly sent the puck into the stands, giving the Thunder a five-on-three power play. Wichita couldn't convert on the two-man advantage and were forced to kill a penalty right after as Jeremy Beaudry was called for interference.
Jared VanWormer made it 1-0 on the power play when he followed his own shot that came off the toe of Starrett and put a backhand past him for his 17th of the year.
Just 18 seconds into the third, MacMillan raced up the right side and beat Adam Carlson to tie the game at one. Shawn Pauly re-gained the lead for the Mavericks at 3:36 as he found a rebound near the net and slid it past Starrett to make it 2-1. Mark Cooper increased the lead to 3-1 at 6:59, firing a shot from a sharp angle that got through Starrett.
MacMillan has goals in three of his last four outings. Brown needs one more assist to reach 50 for his ECHL career.
Wichita went 0-for-4 on the power play. Kansas City was 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Thunder continues its eight-game road trip on Thursday night with a visit to Kalamazoo starting at 6 p.m. CST.
