MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs beat the Reading Royals, 4-1, Wednesday night at SNHU Arena.

The Monarchs (39-20-3-2) won their sixth straight game, 4-1, over the Royals (34-22-8-0) and reclaimed sole possession of the top spot in the North Division.

The Monarchs opened the scoring at 16:50 of the first period on the 32nd goal of the season by Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman. Martin Nemcik hit LaVallee-Smotherman in the neutral zone with a pass, where he skated to the top of the left-wing circle and let a wrist shot fly, over the glove of Royals goaltender, Anthony Stolarz, to make the score, 1-0.

The Monarchs extended their lead at 9:49 of the third period on the 33rd goal of the season and 2nd tally of the night by LaVallee-Smotherman. Off a face-off in the left-wing circle, Matt Marcinew won the draw to LaVallee-Smotherman, who took a quick shot from just above the hashmarks, over the glove of Stolarz, to make the game, 2-0.

The Monarchs took a three-goal lead on the power play at 13:23 of the third period on the 21st goal of the season by Spencer Watson. Along the left blue line, Colton Saucerman passed the puck to Watson in the high slot where he circled down to the right-wing circle and took a wrister, over the glove of Stolarz, to make the score, 3-0.

The Royals got on the board with a power-play goal at 16:13 of the third period on the 29th goal by Matt Willows. Willows carried the puck from the left-wing boards and circled through the top of the zone and to the bottom of the right circle, where he took a shot, through the legs of Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make the score, 3-1.

Manchester added an empty-net goal by Michael Doherty at 18:47 of the third period. Joel Lowry sent a pass to Doherty at the offensive blue line, where Doherty shot the puck into the open net to give the Monarchs a 4-1 victory.

The Monarchs are back in action Friday, Mar. 23 (7 p.m.) when they face off against the Adirondack Thunder, in a battle for the top spot in the North Division.

NOTES:

Spencer Watson recorded his 50th professional point.

Charles Williams made 19 saves on 20 shots.

The Monarchs magic number to clinch a playoff position is now at four.
