Trenton Thunder News Release
Right-handers Deivi Garcia and Chase Hodson carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and Kyle Holder provided the run output in an Eastern Division-clinching 3-0 Thunder victory over the Reading Fightin Phils in front of a crowd of 5,321 on Sunday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
The division title is the 10th in 25 seasons for the Thunder (78-61), who have now won 10 of their last 12 games.
Making his double-A debut, Garcia retired the first nine batters he faced before issuing back-to-back walks to open the fourth inning. The 19-year-old escaped trouble by retiring the next three batters, and proceeded to strike out seven batters over five hitless innings.
Chase Hodson took over for Garcia to begin the sixth, retiring six batters in a row before allowing a leadoff walk to Jose Pujols to begin the seventh. Deivi Grullon then grounded into a force out, but Jan Hernandez hit a hard groundball up the middle for a single, breaking up the Thunder no-hit bid after seven and one-third innings, Trenton's longest bid of the season.
Hodson was then lifted from the game in favor of Matt Wivinis, who struck out two batters to escape the jam. Wivinis went on to toss a scoreless ninth, working around a one-out single by Cornelius Randolph.
Holder produced the game's first run in the second with a solo homer to right field off Reading (64-72) right-hander Harold Arauz. He would produce the final two runs for the Thunder as well, driving home a run from third on a groundout on a fourth-inning groundout, and slashing an RBI-single to center in the seventh.
The shutout was the second in a row for the Thunder, whose bullpen extended its scoreless streak to 32 consecutive innings.
Your Thunder wrap up their regular season on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Fightin Phils. The Thunder have yet to announce their starting pitcher, while RHP Ranfi Casimiro (5-4, 3.62) will go for Reading. The Thunder will celebrate Fan Appreciation Day for the regular season finale. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
