Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Eric Roy from the Allen Americans for forwards Greg Chase and Mitch Maloney.
"It's always a tough day when you part with guys that have played for you for a while," commented Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "However, I felt we needed additional help on our Pp and Eric has proven to be a top ECHL pp guy as well as a kelly cup winner. I felt with our depth up front and with the addition of mark Macmillan that this was something we needed to do."
Roy, 24, is in his fourth year as a pro. A native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound blueliner is a former fifth round draft pick (#135) of the Calgary Flames in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He turned pro in 2015-16, where he helped Allen to a Kelly Cup title. In 52 games during his rookie campaign, he tallied 30 points (14g, 16a) and added 21 points (5g, 16a) in 23 playoff games. Roy has played 170 games for the Americans, piling up 101 points (42g, 39a) over his pro career.
Prior to turning pro, Roy played a four-year career for the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings. He served as an alternate captain in 2013-14 and 2014-15. His best year statistically came in 2011-12, where he registered 53 points (11g, 42a) in 69 games. Overall, he appeared in 322 games for the Wheat Kings where he finished with 200 points (48g, 152a). He also appeared in the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2012-13.
Wichita returns home for back-to-back games this Friday and Saturday night against the Mavericks. Friday, November 16th is Wizards Night, honoring the world of Harry Potter. Saturday night is Nickelodeon Night featuring SpongeBob SquarePants.
