West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - For the first time since August of last year, the West Michigan Whitecaps (23-24) have won three games in a row. Endrys Briceno pitched seven shutout innings for his first win of the season and Jared Reaves hit his first home run of the year to propel the Whitecaps to a 4-2 victory over Lake County (15-31).
Briceno (1-3) allowed just three hits and struck out four. Jose Valdez allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out three to earn his team-leading tenth save of the season.
In the second inning, the Whitecaps took advantage of a misplay by Captains center fielder Lucas Vick who charged in on a line drive off the bat of Jeff Holm. The ball sailed over Vick's head and to the outfield wall as Holm cruised to third with his third triple of the season. Danry Vasquez delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Holm and break the scoreless tie. Austin Schotts came through with an RBI single later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Schotts went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. He also scored in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Zach Kirksey.
Lake County pitcher Jake Sisco (1-4) pitched seven innings and gave up just five hits but took the loss. Reliever Felix Sterling took over for Sisco to start the eighth and served up the home run to Reaves on his first pitch of the afternoon.
The Captains scored in the bottom of the eighth when Whitecaps' reliever Guido Knudson allowed a single to Claudio Bautista, followed by a triple by Erik Gonzalez. Lake County scored in the bottom of the ninth a two-out RBI single by Jorge Martinez.
Monday will mark the final game on the Whitecaps' six-game road trip and the last of the three-game series against the Captains. RHP Edgar de La Rosa (2-0, 5.40) is scheduled to be on the mound for West Michigan against RHP Dylan Baker (1-3, 3.83) of the Captains. First pitch Monday is at 1:00 pm. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be the extremely popular Dime Dog Night on Tuesday, May 28 at 6:35 p.m. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
