May 26, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-Junior Arias scored from third base on Jeff Gelalich's RBI ground out to break a 1-1 tie in the 12th inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons, who have won eight of their last 10 games, have taken the first two games of the set and will try for a series sweep on Monday afternoon.
Arias opened the top of the 12th by ripping a double to the fence in left-center field, and he stole third with no one out. Gelalich then smashed a hard grounder up the middle that deflected off the pitcher toward the second baseman. Arias raced in to score as Gelalich was thrown out at first to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.
Sean Lucas pitched a perfect bottom of the 12th inning for his sixth save, wrapping up a tremendous day for the Dayton bullpen. Dayton relievers Alejandro Chacin, Ben Klimesh combined for six scoreless innings prior to Lucas entering the game. Klimesh (3-0) worked four innings to earn the win. Overall, Dragons pitchers tossed 11 straight scoreless innings after Great Lakes scored one run in the first inning.
The Dragons trailed 1-0 before they tied the game in the seventh inning. Gelalich singled to center field to start the inning and went around to third on a wild pick-off throw. He scored on Robert Ramirez's sacrifice fly to shallow center to make it 1-1.
The Dragons collected six hits. Gelalich and Brent Peterson each had two.
Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon worked five innings, allowing three hits and one run with five walks and five strikeouts. He bounced back nicely after issuing three straight walks and a run in the first.
The Dragons battle the Loons on Monday at 3:05 p.m. in the finale of a three-game series. Pedro Diaz (0-4, 6.92) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Angel Sanchez (1-4, 4.14). The next Dragons home game is Tuesday vs. the South Bend Silver Hawks at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
Notes: The 12-inning marathon was the longest game of the season for both the Dragons and the Loons.
