Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - A see-saw battle went the way of the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-16) as they picked up their seventh consecutive win, defeating the Lansing Lugnuts (21-25), 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Stanley Coveleski Stadium.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lugnuts reliever Ian Kadish came on in relief of starter Alonzo Gonzalez. After a leadoff single by Brandon Drury on Kadish's first pitch, Alex Glenn took the right-hander's second pitch over the fence in right-center, putting South Bend ahead 5-3.
Kadish (Loss, 0-2) took the loss in two innings of relief, allowing the homer to Glenn that decided the game. Gonzalez pitched five solid innings in the start, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks issued.
At the plate, anytime the Lugnuts scored, the Silver Hawks retaliated with runs of their own.
Gustavo Pierre drove in Dwight Smith, Jr. in the first and South Bend came right back with an RBI double by Socrates Brito to tie the game 1-1 after one inning.
In the third, Lansing jumped ahead 2-1 with another run-scoring single by Pierre, but the Hawks plated two in the bottom half to take a 3-2 lead.
Pierre finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Lansing with a pair of runs driven in, knocking Smith, Jr. in both times.
Christian Lopes tied the game 3-3 with a solo home run in the top of the fifth but Glenn's home run was ultimately the winning blow.
A day after Daniel Watts threw seven scoreless innings, Hawks' starter Brandon Sinnery (Win, 2-2) went seven strong innings as well, holding Lansing to three runs on seven hits. Sinnery struck out three and walked one.
RJ Hively pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his 12th save of the season.
The Lugs will look to salvage the series finale on Monday night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Lansing will send Taylor Cole (2-2, 4.60) to the mound against South Bend's right-hander Blake Perry (1-2, 5.28).
