South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Left fielder Alex Glenn launched a game-winning two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 5-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts. Glenn backed up a quality start from South Bend starter Brandon Sinnery (2-2) and helped extend the Hawks' winning streak to seven games.

Lansing (21-25) was the first team to get on the board on Sunday afternoon. Left fielder Dwight Smith Jr. connected on a single to right. Smith Jr. quickly advanced to third as Sinnery's throw on his pick-off attempt at first was in the dirt and rolled into the Hawks bullpen. A single to center by third baseman Gustavo Pierre scored Smith Jr.to give the Lugnuts an early 1-0 lead.

South Bend (31-16) countered in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman Kevin Medrano reached on a lead-off walk from Lansing starter Alonzo Gonzalez. A 5-3 groundout by center fielder Breland Almadova moved Medrano to second. The Hawks knotted the game at 1-1 when right fielder Socrates Brito roped a double down the left field line that scored Medrano.

The Lansing Lugnuts, the Class-A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, added another run in the third. Smith Jr. started the rally with a bloop single over Pedro Ruiz at short. After stealing second, Smith Jr. moved up to third on second baseman Christian Lopes' 4-3 groundout. Pierre remained hot, collecting his second RBI on the day as his single up the middle into center plated Smith Jr., giving the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead.

The bats woke up for South Bend, the Class-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the bottom of the third. Ruiz led off with a single to left field. The speedy Ruiz then came around to score on Medrano's double to deep center. Medrano moved up to third on a 4-3 groundout by Almadova. Brito followed with a slow grounder to first for his second RBI on the day as it allowed Medrano to cross the plate and put the Hawks in front 3-2.

Lansing evened the game in the fifth when Lopes belted a solo homerun to left off a 1-1 Sinnery offering. Sinnery shut out the Lugnuts the rest of the afternoon. In total he allowed three runs, two of which were earned, scattering seven hits, while striking out three, to pick up his second win of the season.

The Hawks broke the 3-3 tie on just two pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reliever Ian Kadish (0-2) entered the game to replace Lugnuts starting pitcher Alonzo Gonzalez to start the bottom of the sixth. Designated hitter Brandon Drury greeted Kadish by lacing the first pitch he saw over the third baseman's head for a single. On the very next pitch, Glenn smashed one over the right-center field fence for a 5-3 Silver Hawks lead.

After Sinnery threw a perfect seventh inning, the Hawks bullpen came in to shut the door on Lansing, in the last two innings. Chris Capper worked around a two out walk in a scoreless eighth inning. RJ Hively (S, 12) finished the game off with back-to-back strikeouts in a clean ninth inning for the save.
