Three Saltdogs standouts receive honors for season

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs handed out the hardware Friday night, naming the recipients for the 2008 Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
First baseman Dustin Yount took home two trophies, taking home both Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors. The lefty slugger was hitting .312 going into Friday night's game, in which he homered and drove in five. His eight homers on the season tie him for the team lead among active players, and his team-best 64 RBI represent a new career high. Yount, the son of Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Robin Yount, was Lincoln's only representative at the 2008 American Association All-Star Game.
Jarrett Gardner took home Saltdogs Pitcher of the Year honors for the second straight season. The Oklahoma native won Friday night's game, boosting his record to 10-6 on the season-the second straight year he's reached double digits in victories for Lincoln. Gardner put together an unbelievable month of July, going 6-0 in six starts with an 0.96 ERA and earning league Pitcher of the Month honors.
Catcher Shawn McGill took home the final trophy as Lincoln's Rookie of the Year. McGill, who became an everyday catcher for the first time in his professional career, was hitting .295 with seven homers and 38 RBI coming into Friday night's contest. Shawn also leads the Saltdogs in triples with six, an amazing number for a catcher. He's also stolen nine bases in ten tries. McGill has proven to be a versatile player as well, having filled in very capably in right field several times during the campaign.
