Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs took out some frustrations Friday night, hammering Sioux Falls 10-2 at Haymarket Park. The Saltdogs had lost nine of their last 11 against the Canaries, but the win puts Lincoln a game behind the Birds for second place in the American Association North.

Lincoln starter Jarrett Gardner (10-6), who was honored during the game as the Saltdogs Pitcher of the Year, had to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, getting Ben Van Iderstine on a deep flyout to right. The Dogs immediately made Sioux Falls pay in the bottom of the first with a five-run rally. The Canaries helped to set the table by committing two errors on one play, giving Dustin Yount the chance to hit a two-run double. Later in the inning, Shea McFeely, Matt Maloney and Deacon Burns each hit consecutive two-out RBI singles, pushing the Lincoln lead to five.

Sioux Falls touched Gardner for a pair of runs in the fourth, but Lincoln broke open the game in the sixth. After back-to-back singles started the inning, Yount stepped up to the plate. The first baseman, who had earlier been named both the Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year for the Saltdogs, cracked a three-run home run to right. The Dogs later added a fourth run in the frame on Burns' second RBI single of the night, and Lincoln scored once more in the eighth to set the final margin.

On the night, Yount finished 3-for-6 with his eighth homer of the season and five RBI. He now lead the team with 64 runs driven in, with also sets a new personal career high. Burns ended up 3-for-5 with two driven in, while Maloney and Albenis Machado each had two hits apiece for the Saltdogs.

The Saltdogs and Canaries play the finale of their four-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Vince Davis is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, in the final home game of the regular season.

The Saltdogs' final homestand runs through August 16. For team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
