
Kirsten, Cats down Diablos 8-2

Joel Kirsten struck out a season-high nine batters in eight innings of work as the Cats whipped El Paso 8-2 on Friday night at LaGrave Field.
A crowd of 4,689 fans saw the Cats jump out to an early lead for the second night in a row as they scored three times in the bottom of the first. Brian Fryer led off the first by reaching on an error, stole second base and scored on a Pat O'Sullivan RBI double. The next batter Jake Gautreau also delivered an RBI double, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead.
After Nelson Teilon flied to the warning track in left, John Allen ripped a double to right, scoring Gautreau for a 3-0 lead.
With a 3-0 lead going to the third, O'Sullivan walked with one out, Gautreau singled before Teilon hit his 16th home run of the season to left, a three-run shot to make it 6-0 Fort Worth.
The Cats would add another run to their lead in the fourth as Fryer came home to score on a passed ball.
Kirsten held the Diablos scoreless until the seventh inning when they scored twice against him. The left-hander wound up going eight innings, permitting two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts to earn his eighth victory. The eight wins in a season are a career high for Kirsten.
Kyle Yates worked a scoreless ninth to close out the Cats' win.
David Whigham (6-7) gave up seven runs, four earned on 10 hits in six innings to suffer the loss for El Paso.
The series concludes on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Dan Grybash goes for the Cats and he will be opposed by Derek Bennett.
