Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Curve fell for the fourth time in five games Monday night at Blair County Ballpark, dropping a 3-2 decision to the visiting Trenton Thunder.
Altoona had plenty of opportunities, but was unable to get timely hits when it most counted leaving four runners stranded in scoring position.
The Curve grabbed a two-spot in the bottom of the third inning by way of a James Boone sacrifice fly and a Melvin Dorta RBI single to take the 2-0 edge.
Starter Josh Hill (0-1), making his Pirates' organizational debut, pitched five innings, giving up three runs. In the fifth, he was tagged for a solo home run by Cody Ehlers leading off the inning. Joe Muich then doubled before being knocked in by Marcos Vechionacci to knot the game at 2-2. Austin Jackson's RBI ground out to third base scored Vechionacci and gave Trenton a 3-2 advantage, which proved to be the decisive run.
The Trenton bullpen stymied the Curve offense when they had good scoring opportunities on more than one occasion. David Robertson pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for starter and winning pitcher Jason Jones (1-0). The Curve were denied in the seventh inning stranding two runners in scoring position, and also missed an opportunity when Jonel Pacheco was doubled off first base on a ball hit to center field by Brad Corley.
Michael Gardner got the final out of the eighth and threw a perfect frame in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
The Curve return to action Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. in the second game of the series as Kyle Bloom (0-1, 14.73) will make his second start of the year. He will be opposed by Chase Wright (0-1, 3.00) for Trenton.
Tuesday at Blair County Ballpark is Dime-a-Degree night. The temperature outside the BCB Ticket Office at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday will be multiplied by 10 cents. That number will determine the price of all Grandstand and UPMC Health Plan Home Run Junction tickets for Tuesday's game. Great seats for Tuesday's game are still available and can be obtained by calling 877-99-CURVE, by purchasing online at AltoonaCurve.com, or by stopping by the Blair County Ballpark Ticket Office.
