Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- It was a cold night in southeastern Connecticut as the Defenders suffered their first loss of 2008 at the hands of the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-3.
Defenders' starter Joey Martinez had a hard time finding the strike zone on Monday night and when he did throw strikes, the Sea Dogs put a bat on the ball. Martinez would only last an inning and two thirds as he allowed five runs on six base hits and two walks. The second inning was where the majority of the damage was done as the Defenders didn't help their starter as they committed three errors in the frame.
The Dogs would tack on two more runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of RBI singles by Ryan Khoury and Iggy Suarez to make the game, 7-0.
Meanwhile, Connecticut's bats were dormant threw four innings as the Sea Dogs starter in Dustin Richardson had a no-hitter going. The Defenders' lone run against Richardson would come in the bottom of the fifth as Carlos Sosa laced a deep fly ball to center field that would drop down for a double. Later, Antoan Richardson singled home Sosa to dig into the wide 7-1 lead.
Richardson was the star of the game as he fanned 10 Defenders in five innings of work.
The Defenders added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth as Travis Ishikawa ripped a hanging slider on the inside portion of the plate to score Adam Witter and Sosa. Trey Webb would go down swinging to end the game with a 7-3 final.
The series against the Sea Dogs will continue Tuesday evening at 6:35pm. Tickets are still available at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
