Stockton Ports News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports opened their four-game road trip on a winning note Thursday night in Adelanto. The Ports scored three runs with two outs in the eighth inning and they proved to be the difference in a 6-4 victory over the High Desert Mavericks. With the loss, High Desert saw its lead over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes shrink to one game with three left to play for the First Half title.
An error led to the first run of the game in the top of the first as Seth Brown led off the game by reaching on a two-base fielding error by first baseman Juremi Profar. Brown scored two batters later on an RBI single by B.J. Boyd to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.
High Desert tied the score with one swing in the bottom of the fourth as Jose Cardona led off with a home run off Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (2-1). Stockton came right back in the top of the fifth and drew back-to-back one-out walks off Mavericks starter Adam Quintana. Brown came to bat next and delivered a single to center that gave the Ports a 2-1 lead. Richie Martin followed and drove in a run with a fielder's choice groundout to make it a 3-1 Ports advantage.
Quintana completed the fifth for High Desert and would receive a no-decision as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out five.
Friedrichs would see the score tied on his watch in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and two out, Profar hit a two-run game-tying double to center to knot the score at 3-3. Friedrichs would go on to retire the final four batters he faced after the double as he set the side down in order in the eighth. He would go on to earn the win, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking five and not issuing a walk in seven innings.
Shane McCain (1-1) took over for High Desert in the sixth and retired the first eight batters he faced taking him two outs deep into the eighth after back-to-back strikeouts. Boyd extended the inning with a double to left and James Harris drove him in with a double to left-center to give the Ports a 4-3 lead. Sandber Pimentel followed with the decisive blow of the contest, a two-run homer to right, his second in as many nights, to make it a 6-3 Ports advantage.
McCain suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in two-and-two-thirds of an inning of work.
After Cody Stull escaped a jam with two on in the bottom of the eighth, Carlos Navas (SV, 3) came on to pitch the ninth. Navas set the first two batters down, but then allowed a solo home run to Jairo Beras that cut the Ports lead to 6-4. Navas got Josh Morgan to ground out to shortstop to end the ballgame and notch his third save of the season.
The Ports and Mavericks play the second game of their four-game set on Saturday in Adelanto. Brett Graves (2-5, 5.11 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Ariel Jurado (5-1, 3.20 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
