Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Trent Woodward hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the JetHawks fell to the Bakersfield Blaze on Thursday night at The Hangar in the series opener, 6-4 in 12 innings.
Woodward, who was 0-for-16 since joining the JetHawks, belted his two-run shot on a line just over the right field wall. Chantz Mack provided the winning runs for Bakersfield in the top of the 12th inning with a two-out, two-run triple.
Woodward nearly won the game for the JetHawks in the bottom of the 11th inning, when he came up with the winning run at third base and two out. He hit a ground ball that nearly got past Bakersfield second baseman Gianfranco Wawoe, but Wawoe was able to dive to his right to stop the ball and throw to first in time for the out to save the game for the Blaze.
Each team scored a run in the opening inning. Lancaster's came on a long home run to center by Drew Ferguson, his fifth of the season.
Bakersfield went back in front on an Aaron Barbosa RBI triple in the third inning, before the JetHawks tied it again in the fifth on an RBI single by Bobby Boyd.
The Blaze scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. After a leadoff walk to Jay Baum in the seventh, he later came in to score on a double play grounder. Mack provided the other run with an RBI single in the eighth.
Brock Dykxhoorn started for the JetHawks and the right-hander took a no-decision. He went five innings and allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out five.
Ryan Deemes (2-1) took the loss for Lancaster in relief. He tossed a pair of shutout innings before running into trouble in his third frame on the hill. In the tenth inning, Bakersfield put a runner on third base with nobody out and Deemes was able to retire the next three in order to work out of the jam.
The game was the first extra inning contest that the JetHawks have played in this season.
The JetHawks (34-32) and Blaze (34-33) continue their four-game series on Friday night at The Hangar. Left-hander Matt Bower (2-2) will start for Lancaster against right-hander Tyler Herb (6-2). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
