Blaze Win 12-Inning Thriller, 6-4

Bakersfield Blaze News Release

In a contest that saw Bakersfield take the lead four different times, the Lancaster Jethawks were only able to come back and tie it thrice, and the Blaze made two runs in the 12th inning stand up for a series-opening 6-4 road victory in the Antelope Valley.

The game started quickly for each team, as Bakersfield scratched for a run in the 1st on back-to-back singles from Aaron Barbosa and Chantz Mack before Kyle Petty's flyball scored Barbosa for a 1-0 lead. Moments later the Jethawks knotted it up on a Drew Ferguson solo homer.

In the 3rd, the Blaze once again moved in front by a run when Aaron Barbosa tripled home Drew Jackson with two outs, but that lead was also erased, this time in the 5th, when the Jethawks strung together three singles to tie the contest at two runs apiece.

Bakersfield then strung a pair of innings together with a tally. A walk and a single in the 7th set up a run on a groundout, and some fine execution in the 8th plated run number four: Jackson singled, Barbosa bunted him to second, and Mack singled him home.

Unfortunately for Bakersfield, an old nemesis visited at an inopportune time. Isaac Sanchez turned in brilliant 7th and 8th innings, but Vinny Nittoli hit the leadoff man with an errant fastball, and the Jethawks homered immediately thereafter for a game-tying two-run shot, sending the game to extra innings.

And four runs apiece is how it stayed into the 12th when Gianfranco Wawoe and Aaron Barbosa singled, and Chantz Mack delivered again with a two-run triple off Ryan Deemes (L, 2-1) for the 6-4 lead.

Thyago Vieira (W, 1-0) pitched the 11th and the 12th for the win, an exciting one that moves the Blaze to 4-5 in a league-most nine extra-inning games on the year.

The series in Lancaster continues with another 6:35pm start on Friday evening, as Tyler Herb toes the rubber for the Blaze. Dan Besbris has the call on TuneIn Radio and via the link at BakersfieldBlaze.com.
