Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes got right and got help on Thursday night, snapping a brief two-game skid with a 5-2 win over the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
In addition to Rancho's win, the Quakes got some help from the last-place Stockton Ports, who knocked off High Desert in Adelanto, pulling Rancho to within one game of the Mavs with three games to go in the first half.
A two-run homer by C.J Hinojosa in the first inning off rehabbing Dodger Brandon McCarthy was San Jose's only bright spot of the game, as they took an early 2-0 lead.
Rancho eventually got even in the fourth, as Matt Beaty doubled home Tim Locastro and Devan Ahart brought home rehabbing outfielder Yasiel Puig, squaring the game at 2-2.
Garrett Kennedy led off the fifth inning by blasting his first homer as a Quake, as it turned out to be the game-winner, putting Rancho ahead to stay at 3-2. Joey Curletta doubled right behind him and later scored on an RBI groundout by Puig, making it 4-2 against Giants' starter Jason Forjet (6-5).
Rancho got a big insurance run in the eighth, as Johan Mieses doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout from Beaty, putting Rancho up 5-2.
Grant Holmes, the third pitcher on the night for Rancho and their originally-scheduled starter, was strong on Thursday night, tossing five innings of shut-out baseball. With Bubby Rossman (3-0) getting credit for the win, Holmes was actually credited with a five-inning save, his first as a professional.
McCarthy rebounded after giving up the two-run home run, as he pitched three innings in his second rehab appearance, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Rancho's win ups their record to 41-26, as they match their highest win-total for a first half in franchise history (2015). Now just one game back of High Desert (42-25), the Quakes will send rehabbing Dodger Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1) to the mound on Friday night, as he's expected to go four innings or 65 pitches. Tommy Bergjans, Friday's originally-scheduled starter should follow in relief. San Jose will counter with Jose Reyes (2-1), with game time slated for 7:00pm.
The Quakes return to second-half action at LoanMart Field on Thursday, June 23rd, as they host the High Desert Mavericks in a four-game series. Thursday will be another Thirsty Thursday, presented by Bernard's, as fans can enjoy $2 Pepsi products, $3 16-oz domestic drafts and $4 16-oz premium drafts, wine, champagne and margaritas.
