June 26, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Pacific Coast League announced today that three Sacramento River Cats players have been voted onto its roster for the 16th Annual Triple-A All-Star Game, which will be played July 16 (5:05 p.m. PST) at AutoZone Park in Memphis (Memphis Redbirds). The three River Cats players that will represent Sacramento in the game are first baseman Dave McCarty and pitchers Rich Harden and Justin Duchscherer.
"It is rare to have three players voted to play in the Triple-A All-Star Game," River Cats Senior Vice President and General Manager Gary Arthur said. "That is a tribute to the quality of this year's club. We have a winning mixture of young prospects and veteran players, and the three players chosen to represent Sacramento in this game are a microcosm of that."
Harden, 21, has dominated the PCL since he was promoted from Midland (Double-A) in April. In 12 games (11 starts) with Sacramento this season, he is 8-2 with a 2.88 ERA. Harden is tied for second in the PCL with eight wins, and he ranks fifth in the league in strikeouts (71) and ERA (2.88). He is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA in four games (three starts) at Raley Field and is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four starts in June. Harden began the season with Midland, where he went 2-0 and allowed no runs, hits or bases on balls in two starts (13.0 IP). In three seasons of professional baseball, he is 24-12 with a 2.91 ERA in 60 games (55 starts).
Earlier this week, Harden was selected to participate in the Radio Shack All-Star Futures Game as a member of the World Team. A native of Victoria, British Columbia (Canada), he was the Oakland Athletics' 17th-round selection in the June 2000 Draft out of Central Arizona College.
Duchscherer, 25, is 6-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 13 starts with Sacramento this season. He has the third-best ERA in the PCL, and he is 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA in six starts at Raley Field. Duchscherer has won his last three starts. This season marks his second with the River Cats, as Duchscherer went 2-4 with a 5.57 ERA in 14 games (11 starts) with Sacramento last year. He is 49-46 with a 3.47 ERA in 159 career minor league games (143 starts). Duchscherer is 1-1 with a 12.27 ERA in five career major league games (two starts).
Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 1996 Draft out of high school, Duchscherer was traded to the Texas Rangers in June 2001 for Doug Mirabelli. He was acquired by the Oakland A's in March 2002 for Luis Vizcaino.
McCarty, 33, is batting .270 (82-for-304) with 14 HR and 62 RBI in 79 games. He leads the PCL with 62 RBI and ranks second in runs (58) and fifth in home runs (five). McCarty leads the River Cats in runs (58), hits (82), doubles (19) and runs batted in (62).
This season marks McCarty's 13th in professional baseball. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round (third overall) of the 1991 Draft out of Stanford. He signed with the A's (his eighth organization) in November 2002. In 823 career minor league games, McCarty is batting .307 (914-for-2,981) with 135 HR and 519 RBI. He has batted .236 (303-for-1,285) with 31 HR and 148 RBI in 504 career major league games.
The River Cats have never had three players selected to play in the Triple-A All-Star Game. SS Jose Ortiz played in the 2000 All-Star Game, and LF Eric Byrnes and hitting coach Roy White were members of the PCL's 2001 squad. RHP Erik Hiljus was selected to play in the 2001 All-Star Game, but he was recalled by Oakland prior to the game. RHP Frank Lankford was Sacramento's lone representative in last season's All-Star Game.
The Triple-A All-Star Game will feature the top Pacific Coast League and International League prospects. The roster for the Pacific Coast League All-Star Team was selected by the managers, general managers and media of the 16 Pacific Coast League teams. Each PCL club will be represented by at least one player in the game, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 (television), Sporting News Radio and Armed Forces Radio.
Next season's Triple-A All-Star Game will be played in Pawtucket, R.I. (Pawtucket Red Sox). The 2005 game has been awarded to the River Cats and will be played at West Sacramento's Raley Field.
