
Balfe Transferred from Double-A

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that catcher Ryan Balfe has been transferred from Double-A Harrisburg. The club also announced that the Montreal Expos have acquired right-handed pitcher Enmanuel Ulloa from the Seattle Mariners and assigned him to the Trappers roster. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 22 players; 10 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and four outfielders, plus two players (left-handed pitcher Scott Downs and right-handed pitcher Bo Donaldson) on the disabled list.
Balfe, 27, batted .295 (23-for-78) with one home run and 13 RBI in 26 games with Harrisburg this season. He began the season with Single-A Brevard County and appeared in 30 games with the Manatees, batting .291 (32-for-110) with four home runs and 27 RBI. The Cornwall, New York native was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the eight round of the 1994 draft. He was traded by the Tigers to the San Diego Padres with right-handed pitcher Dan Miceli and right-handed pitcher Donne Wall in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tim Worrell and outfielder Trey Beamon on November 19, 1997. Balfe has also spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs organizations. He split the 2002 season between Triple-A Memphis, where he batted .143 (2-for-14) in six games, Double-A West Tennessee, where he batted .200 (17-for-85) with one home run and seven RBI in 23 games and independent Long Island, where he batted .246 (49-for-199) with five home runs and 30 RBI in 61 games. Balfe began the season as a career .267 batter (704-for-2637) with 75 home runs and 389 RBI in 747 minor league games.
Ulloa, 24, was 1-1, 3.20 (50.2 IP - 18 ER) with one save in 17 appearances (seven starts) with Single-A Inland Empire, and 0-1, 9.28 (10 IP - 11 ER) in eight appearances with Double-A San Antonio. He began the season with San Antonio and was transferred to Inland Empire in late April. The La Vega, Dominican Republic native was originally selected in the 21st round of the 1997 draft by the Mariners and has spent his entire career with the Seattle organization. Ulloa (pronounced o-JO-ah) spent the 2002 season with Triple-A Tacoma, where he posted a 4-7 record and a 5.96 ERA (77.0 IP - 51 ER) in 38 appearances (two starts) with the Rainiers. Ulloa began the 2003 season with a career 26-18 record and a 4.10 ERA (452.0 IP - 206 ER) in 168 appearances (41 starts).
The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, June 27 when the club will take on the Tacoma Rainiers. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
