Wasdin, Corey Named To All-Star Team

June 26, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — Starting pitcher John Wasdin and closer Mark Corey have been named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and will represent the Sounds on the 28-man squad that takes on the International League stars in the 2003 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 16 at AutoZone Park in Memphis.

Wasdin, 30, currently leads the Pacific Coast League with 107 strikeouts and ranks 8th in the circuit in ERA. The Jacksonville, Fla. resident, who is tied for the Nashville team lead with seven victories, is 7-3 with a team-best 3.20 ERA through 16 starts this season and has walked only 21 batters in his 98 1/3 innings of work. Wasdin has tallied four of the five double-digit K totals by Sounds starters in 2003.

His incredible season has been book-ended by a pair of outstanding performances. The right-hander opened the season in grand fashion when he hurled a perfect game on April 7 against Albuquerque in his first start of the campaign, fanning a PCL-best 15 Isotopes in the contest. It was only the second nine-inning perfecto in the 100-year history of the PCL and the first in the 26-year history of the Sounds. His second-best outing was his most recent; he fanned 11 Colorado Springs Sky Sox and allowed only two hits over eight innings of scoreless ball on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.

The All-Star nod is the second of Wasdin's 10-year pro career; he was the winning pitcher in the 1994 Double-A All-Star game as a member of the Huntsville Stars (AA-A's).

Corey, 28, has been the PCL's top fireman this season, pacing the league with 22 saves (a total that is tied for second in the minors). He has posted a 1-2 record and 4.36 ERA in a team-high 33 appearances, fanning 45 batters while walking only 15. It is Corey's first career All-Star selection.

His 22 saves are the most by a Nashville hurler in six seasons and the 2nd-most in the Austin, Pa. native's nine-year pro career (27 in 2001 while he was with the New York Mets organization).

Nashville is one of six PCL clubs with two players named to the squad. Colorado Springs (AAA-Rockies), Las Vegas (AAA-Dodgers), and Sacramento (AAA-A's) each had three players selected.
