Three-Goal Second Period Lifts Phantoms over Dubuque 5-2

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - An offensive explosion in the second period lifted the Youngstown Phantoms (3-9-0-0, 6 points) over the Dubuque Fighting Saints 5-2 at the Covelli Centre Friday night. The victory snapped the Phantoms' six-game losing streak.

"When you're missing players, it feels like you're missing part of your whole," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "It was refreshing to have a full contingent of roster players here today. I think the guys fed off that energy."

After a scoreless first period, Riley Duran opened the scoring, firing home a rebound at 2:36 for his first USHL goal. It was the first 5-on-5 goal for the Phantoms in over 200 minutes of game time. Nate Hanley doubled the Youngstown lead at 3:44, redirecting Kyle Furey's shot past Hobie Hedquist (12 saves). Bennett Zmolek made it 3-0 Phantoms at 9:29 when Yusaku Ando's centering pass hit off Zmolek as he went crashing into the crease. Zmolek knocked over Hedquist and the net off its moorings, but the puck crossed the line before the net came off, resulting in a goal. Hedquist was replaced by Aidan McCarthy (5 saves) after Zmolek's goal. The second period was the Phantoms first three-goal period since December 11 vs Chicago and marked their first multi-goal lead since the first period on November 14 vs Green Bay.

Dubuque got on the board with a wrist shot from John Evans 6:56 into the third, but the Phantoms answered back with a one-timer from between the circles from Ben Schoen at 12:05. Dubuque responded at 14:47 when Primo Self finished a 2-on-1 with Daniyal Dzhaniyev, but Schoen scored an empty netter with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation to ice away the victory.

With the win, Patterson tied Anthony Noreen's record of 126 wins as the Phantoms head coach. Patterson's record is 126-92-17-9 since taking over before the start of the 2016-2017 season. Noreen was 126-99-10-9 in his four seasons at the helm (2011-15) before he left to coach the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears. Patterson will look to break Noreen's record tomorrow night as the Phantoms take on the Fighting Saints again at 7:05.
