Saints Scribbles: Dubuque Can't Muster Offense in 4-1 Loss

January 9, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Mattias Sholl was the difference between the pipes as Youngstown completed a sweep of Dubuque with a 4-1-win Saturday. Connor Kurth scored the only goal for the Saints who will look to bounce back next weekend on home ice.

-Youngstown struck first, as Reilly Funk assisted on a great goal from Cole Burtch. The point was the first for Funk other than a goal as he picked up his fifth overall point this season.

-Funk was involved in the action in a negative way later in the period as he picked up a five-minute major late in the first.

-The power play didn't cost Youngstown, as they ended up scoring a man down. Ben Schoen picked up his seventh goal in as many games played, scoring on a breakaway with 30 seconds left in the period. Youngstown kept that two-goal lead into the second period.

-Dubuque came up empty on the remainder of their five-minute power play as Mattias Sholl showed up as the difference maker once again for Youngstown. A night after his second win of the season, Sholl made 22 stops through the first two periods to keep the Phantoms well ahead.

-After the Saints squandered their power play opportunity, the Phantoms made them pay by taking advantage of their own late in the second period. Youngstown scored with less than a minute left in the period on a point shot from Austen May.

-Once again, Hobie Hedquist did not have much to do with the goals allowed. Dubuque's defense struggled to keep Youngstown away from the high-scoring areas.

-Dubuque broke the ice in the third period on Connor Kurth's eighth of the season. Unfortunately for the Saints it was their only goal of the game as Sholl and Youngstown continued to shut out the Saints after the goal. Sholl finished with 30 saves on the night and 57 over the two weekend games.

-Kurth's goal gave him eight on the season and he continues to set the pace for Dubuque and the USHL in rookie scoring. No one on the Saints has more points than Kurth's 16 and his point total also paces the USHL.

-The Saints host Waterloo on Friday the 15th and then switch over to Des Moines on Saturday. It will be the only home weekend this season that doesn't feature an Eastern Conference team for Dubuque.
