Three Errors Too Much for Scrappers
August 28, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Niles, OH-Three Mahoning Valley Scrappers errors would prove costly on Saturday night in a 6-4 loss to the West Virginia Black Bears at Eastwood Field. The three unearned runs allowed on the errors would prove to be the difference as the Scrappers ninth inning rally came up just short.
The Scrappers would grab the early lead in the first inning. Todd Isaacs reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. He would then score on a Nate Winfrey RBI single for the 1-0 lead.
West Virginia would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Will Craig would connect on a solo homerun off of Scrappers starter Brady Aiken. It would tie the game and would also be the only run allowed by Aiken in the game.
The Black Bears would get the lead in the top of the sixth inning. With one out Ty Moore walked. He would then come around to break the tie on back to back singles from Craig and Albert Baur.
A fielding error and a throwing error combined with a wild pitch would add three more runs on the board for the Black Bears in the top of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning the Scrappers would get a run back on an RBI sacrifice fly from Winfrey to drive in Alexis Pantoja.
After another error led to another West Virginia run in the top of the ninth, the Scrappers would rally late. Mahoning Valley would get two runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull to within two and bring the tying run to the plate. However, it was as close as they would get.
Aiken started and took a no decision in 5.0 innings or work. He allowed one earned run on three hits. Aiken didn't walk a batter and struck out five. Randy Valladares (2-3) took the loss in 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed four runs, two earned on four hits. Valladares walked one and struck out one. Ping-Hsueh Chen, Henry Martinez and Ben Krauth would also see time in relief.
The Scrappers (33-33) and Black Bears (32-35) continue their series on Sunday night at 4:05. Shane Bieber will get the start for the Scrappers. Scrappers ticket packages and single game tickets can be purchased by calling 330-505-0000 or by visiting the Mr. Rooter Box Office at Eastwood Field.
