Tigers Blast Lake Monsters, 11-2

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers knocked off the Vermont Lake Monsters 11-2 to win the series and move their record to 8-3 against the affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.

The Lake Monsters initiated the scoring in the top of the second inning against Austin Sodders. Tyler Ramirez hit a triple to the right center and scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Marinez to take a 1-0 lead. The run ended a scoreless streak of 19 consecutive scoreless frames for Austin Sodders.

Sodders finished the game pitching three innings, allowing two hits, one earned and struck out three.

The Tigers quickly knotted the ballgame up at one apiece with a Mario Sanjur sacrifice fly to centerfield. Sanjur drove in Will Savage, who tripled to lead off the inning.

The Tigers took the lead for the second straight night courtesy of a four-run fourth inning. The frame was highlighted by a three-run home run from Sam Machonis. The long ball was the first career homer for Machonis and made it 5-1 Tigers.

The Tigers continued to pile on in the seventh inning with another four-run frame. Will Savage drilled his second triple of the night down the left field line to plate two Tigers and make it 9-2. Mario Sanjur then followed with his third hit and third RBI of the night, driving in Savage from third to make it 10-2 Connecticut.

Jordan Smith earned the victory tonight, his third straight win for Connecticut. Smith pitched three solid innings, allowing four hits, one earned and struck out five Lake Monsters.

The Tigers have scored 10 or more runs five times this season, four of them coming against Vermont. Five Tigers contributed multi-hit games for the Tigers this evening, Savage, Woodrow, Bauml and Lester all collected two-hits, while Sanjur picked up three on the night.

The Tigers go for the sweep tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. Kyle Funkhouser makes the start against the Lake Monsters.
