Will Savage snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as the Connecticut Tigers scored three runs in the inning to complete a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 3-0 shutout victory in New York-Penn League action Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.
Austin Athmann got the Tigers rally started in the eighth inning with a one-out line drive single off Vermont reliever Matt Milburn. Chad Sedio followed with a line drive double to leftcenter to advance Athmann over to third base, where he scored from on Savage's groundball RBI single to rightfield against a drawn-in Lake Monsters defense. Tanner Donnels plated Connecticut's second run with a sacrifice fly to center before Brady Policelli capped off the inning with an RBI single to center off Milburn.
Four Connecticut pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, the eighth time that the Lake Monsters have been held scoreless in a game this season including the second time in the last four contests. Vermont had just four baserunners in the game as the Tiger pitchers combined for zero walks and eight strikeouts. The Lake Monsters base hits came on one-out singles in the second, third and fourth innings and a two-out single in the eighth after 13 straight batters had been retired.
Vermont starter Jesus Zambrano scattered six hits and three walks over five scoreless innings while also striking out five Tigers in the no decision. Milburn (1-1) retired seven of the first eight batters he faced before allowing the three runs on four hits in the eighth ininng. The Lake Monsters defense, which leads the NYPL with 112 errors this season, recorded their third straight errorless game on Sunday.
Tigers starter Kyle Funkhouser and Alfred Gutierrez both tossed three scoreless innings, while John Schreiber (2-1) onne hit and two strikeouts over two scoreless innings to earn the victory for Connecticut (38-30). After the Tigers scored the three runs in the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Garcia tossed a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save. The three-run eighth also marked the 14th time that a Lake Monsters opponent has won the game in their final at bat.
The loss was the fourth straight overall for Vermont (24-44), which fell 20 games below .500 for the first time since the end of the 2006 season. With three games remaining this month, the Lake Monsters also fell to 5-21 in August, tying a team record for August losses set back in 2006 (7-21).
Vermont will look to get back in the win column on Monday when the Lake Monsters return home to begin a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats. All fans in attendance for the 7:05 contest will receive a free Lake Monsters team photo courtesy of Catamount Color.
