Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - Five runs over the game's first two innings did the trick as the Hudson Valley Renegades increased their win streak to 11 games with a 7-4 win over the Aberdeen Ironbirds Saturday night on Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium. For Hudson Valley they have won 13 of their last 17 series and will go for their seventh sweep in that span tomorrow. The team is 36-11 since July 4th and has decreased their magic number for clinching the McNamara Division to five.

The scoring started early for Hudson Valley as the Renegades put two runs on the board in the first inning. Centerfielder Jake Fraley led off the game with a single to center before stealing second one out later. After second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni drew a walk, Fraley and Mastrobuoni would steal second and third respectively to put runners at second and third with one out.

Designated hitter Jose Rojas would then ground to short to score Fraley and move Mastrobuoni to third to give the Renegades the game's first run. First baseman Nate Lowe followed that with a double to left to score Mastrobuoni and make the score 2-0.

The Ironbirds got a run back in the bottom-half. Second baseman Kirvin Mosequit reached on an infield single to third before moving to second on a wild pitch. After a walk and strikeout, rightfielder Austin Hays lined a single to left to score Moesquit and pull Aberdeen to within one.

Hudson Valley took control of the game in the second by scoring a three-run rally after no one was on with two out. Errors by the Ironbirds defense keyed the Renegades uprising.

Shortstop Bill Pujols walked, then went to third on a double from Fraley. Third baseman Jim Haley batted next and grounded a ball to Moesquit, which would have ended the inning, but the second baseman booted the ball allowing Pujols to score and moving Fraley to third.

Haley would then steal second, however the throw from catcher Jerry McClanahan was missed by Aberdeen shortstop Irving Ortega. The ball went into centerfield and the second error of the inning allowed Fraley to score to give Hudson Valley a 4-1 lead. Mastrobuoni followed and scored Haley on a triple to center to make it 5-1.

The Renegades extended their lead by two more in the fourth. With one out, Fraley collected his third hit of the game on another single to center. He would score when Haley launched his first homer of the year. It was a two-run shot over the leftfield wall to make the score 7-1.

Aberdeen would score the game's final three runs to make the final close. In the fourth as Hays singled to center to start the inning and went to second on a walk to Ortega. A balk moved each runner up a base before third baseman Chris Clare grounded out to short to score Hays.

In the sixth, first baseman Preston Palmeiro singled to right then scored on a double to center by Ortega to make it 7-3. In the eighth, Hays doubled to center then scored on a single by Palmeiro to pull the Ironbirds to within three.

However, that was as close as Aberdeen got. Back-to-back singles by the Ironbirds brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth with one out, but Renegades closer Joe Serrapica got Heinrich to fly out to left and McKenna to strike out swinging to end the game. It was Serrapica's eighth save in as many opportunities. The righty still has not given up a run this season.

Southpaw Brock Burke (3-3) got the win for Hudson Valley after he allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. For the third time this season, the Hudson Valley starter matched a team season-high in strikeouts with eight. The loss went to Aberdeen starter Matthias Dietz as the second-rounder in this year's draft was touched up for five runs on five hits in only two innings of work. He fell to 0-2 on the season.

Each team had 11 hits with Fraley leading the way with three including a double and three runs scored in four at-bats. Lowe chipped in by going 2-5 with a double and RBI. Aberdeen got a 4-4 night by Moesquit who also scored a run. Hays went 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. He now has five hits in the series. Palmeiro was 2-4 with a run and RBI as well.

Hudson Valley will go for the sweep against Aberdeen on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 5:05. Righty Spencer Moran (4-1, 2.06 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Renegades against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Ironbirds. The Renegades return home next Thursday, September 1st to kick off the final regular
