August 28, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
The Connecticut Tigers won their seventh straight game at Dodd Stadium beating the Vermont Lake Monsters, 3-0 this afternoon. The win is the 23rd victory at Dodd Stadium this season, second most in team history.
The eighth inning proved to be the difference, in a 0-0 game the Tigers scored all three runs in the frame. Austin Athmann and Chad Sedio set the table by singling and doubling to put runners at second and third. With the infield drawn in, Will Savage hit a bullet into right field to score Athmann and give Connecticut the 1-0 lead. Tanner Donnels lifted a sacrifice fly to center, while Brady Policelli grounded an RBI single back up the middle to make it a 3-0 Tigers lead.
The pitching was outstanding this afternoon for Connecticut, pitching their way to the team's seventh shutout of the season. Alfred Gutierrez threw three innings of one hit ball, while John Schrieber earned his second victory with a two-inning stint in which the right-hander gave up one hit and struck out a pair.
Kyle Funkhouser continued his dominance at Dodd Stadium with a three inning scoreless start for the Tigers. Funkhouser has now thrown 12 scoreless frames in Norwich this season. Funkhouser only allowed two hits and punched out three.
Bryan Garcia finished it out for the Tigers with his fourth save of the season, logging a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Tigers offense racked up double digit hits for the third straight game. Mario Sanjur (2-3), Josh Lester (2-4) and Will Savage (2-4, RBI) each had multi-hit efforts.
The Tigers head to Staten Island for a highly anticipated series with the Yankees. Connecticut sits 1.5 games back of first place in the Wild Card Standings, occupied by Staten Island. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night.
