Cross, Almonte Shut out Doubledays in 7-0 Victory

*Carson Cross *and *Max Almonte *combined to produce the State College Spikes' third shutout of the season, and the offense bolstered their efforts in a 7-0 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Sunday evening at Falcon Park.

With the victory, the Pinckney Division champion Spikes (45-23) remained within percentage points of Hudson Valley in the race for the top seed in the NYPL playoffs with eight games remaining on the schedule.

Cross (5-5) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings of work for the win.

Almonte (1) then followed and earned the automatic three-inning save after allowing two hits while striking out four batters. Almonte also preserved the shutout despite *Tres Barrera*'s leadoff triple in the ninth, recording a strikeout, lineout and flyout in that order to end the game.

The Spikes took the lead in third as they loaded up the bases with two outs and *Ricardo Bautista*'s bounced a ball up the middle that was erred upon to score a pair of runs. In the fifth, *Yariel Gonzalez *extended the State College lead to 3-0 with a single.

*Danny Hudzina* then knocked in two runs with his second double of the game in the eighth inning. *Andy Young*'s triple and a Gonzalez groundout then finished the scoring in the ninth.

Young produced three hits on the game for State College, while *Mick Fennell *collected two hits, including a double.

The Spikes will come back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a three-game series against the Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles), staring with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Monday. Right-hander *Steven Farinaro *(8-1) will have a chance to set the State College single-season wins record as he gets the start. Aberdeen is scheduled to send left-hander *Travis Seabrooke *(1-6) to the hill.
