Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, CO- Three Colorado Eagles players have been picked to start in the 2006 CHL All-Star Game in Hidalgo, Texas on January 18, 2006. Captain right winger Greg Pankewicz, veteran defenseman Brad Williamson and goaltender Paulo Colaiacovo will represent the Eagles and the Northern Conference along with Eagles head coach Chris Stewart and staff consisting of trainer Chris Porowski, ATC and equipment manager Tony Deynzer.
Balloting among Northern Conference coaches, communications staff and selected media members in each city determined the three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender named to the starting line-up. The remainder of the All-Stars will be announced on Tuesday, January 3rd, as selected by Northern Conference Coach Chris Stewart, in conjunction with the CHL's Hockey Operations Department.
For Pankewicz, this is his third selection in as many years with Colorado. He broke All-Star Game records in last seasons 14-13 shootout victory when he tallied nine points and five goals on his way to being the Northern Conference's MVP. The Eagles' right winger leads the Central Hockey League's first place team with 36 points on 18 goals and 18 assists and is second in the league with 171 penalty minutes (behind Eagles' Les Borsheim).
Brad Williamson is going to his second CHL All-Star Game and first since 2004. The steady defenseman represented the Eagles in the 2004 CHL All-Star Game in Alburquerque, New Mexico and had one assist and was a team high +5 in the Northern Conference's 12-9 win. This season, Williamson leads all defenseman on the Eagles in scoring with 31 points and he leads the team with 25 assists. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native is second in the league in scoring for defenseman behind Serge Dube of the Laredo Bucks.
Paulo Colaiacovo will be starting and playing in his first professional All-Star Game. He has paced the Central Hockey League all season and leads all goaltenders with 15 wins in just 19 games played. The Etobicoke, Ontario native is third in the league with a 2.48 GAA and he is seventh with a .919 save percentage. The Eagles goaltender played in only ten games with the team last season, but in the playoffs, Colaiacovo won all three series-clinching games for Colorado as they won the 2005 President's Cup.
The other starters for the Northern Conference include: Wichita Thunder forward Joe Blaznek, Youngstown SteelHounds forward Jeff Christian and Memphis RiverKings defenseman Derek Landmesser. The 2006 CHL All-Star Game, presented by Obra Homes, is slated for Wednesday, January 18th at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, home of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
