Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Loveland. CO. - The Youngstown SteelHounds (11-17-1) traveled into Colorado to take on the best team in the CHL and fell victim to the Colorado Eagles special teams who scored three power play goals and added a shorthanded goal in a 6-3 victory. Ryan Tobler had two goals for the Eagles (22-6-1) and Jeff Christian and Chris Richards each had a goal and a helper for the SteelHounds who have dropped three straight games and four straight away from home.

The Eagles didn't waste any time to get the offense going as they scored just 19 seconds into the game, the fastest goal to start a game against the Hounds this season. Garrett Larsen got credit for his 12th goal of the season as he re-directed an Erik Adams shot by David St. Germain. Adams and Greg Pankewicz drew the assists. Colorado made it 2-0 later in the period when the Hounds were on the power play. Sean Robertson picked off a pass and went down the ice on a shorthanded 2-on-1. Robertson slid a pass across the goalmouth finding Ryan Tobler who buried it for his 11th goal of the season, second shorthanded goal against Youngstown. The first period featured a couple of good tilts with heaveyweights Kris Mallette (the former Colorado Eagle) and Les Borsheim dropped the gloves at 4:43 and Shawn Mamane and Fraser Filipic went at the 9:29 mark. The Eagles outshot the Hounds 12-11 in the period as Paulo Colaiacovo ran his shutout streak against Youngstown to 80 minutes.

Youngstown cut the lead in half in the second period with a goal scored by Jeff Christian, his league-leading 26th of the season, assisted by Chris Richards and Jonathan Gagnon at the 5:13 mark. Earlier in the day, Christian was named a starter for the Northern Conference in the upcoming CHL All-Star game. Colorado answered with a slap shot by Aaron Grosul that St. Germain would love to have back. Grosul's laser beat St. Germain up high just as the netminder was dropping down for a low shot. It was Grosul's first goal of the season assisted by Filipic and Robertson at the 7:48 mark of the period making the score 3-1 in favor of the Eagles. The Hounds cut it back to a goal on a 5-on-3 power play with Chris Richards beating Colaiacovo top shelf for his 10th goal of the season and second point of the night assisted by Christian, his second point of the night. Late in the frame, the Eagles would capatilaize with the man advantage as well when Tobler teed up a shot from the right circle beating St. Germain to the outside post. Brad Williamson drew the only assist at the 16:04 mark making it 4-2 after two period. The Eagles outshot the Hounds 15-8 in the period.

Colorado added to their lead early in the third on the power play when Scott Polaski scored his sixth goal of the season assisted by Adams and Williamson at the 5:43 mark. Trailing 5-2, Youngstown kept putting the pressure on closing the gap once again this time with a solo effort by rookie Chris Shaffer who took a defenseman with him and slapped a shot by the Colorado goaltender for his third goal of the season and third in the last four games. The Eagles answered right back with their third power play goal of the night, this one scored by Filipic earning him the Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist and fight).

The Eagles outshot the SteelHounds 41-27 in the game as St. Germain falls to 7-12-1 making 35 saves. Colaiacovo stopped 24 shots improving to 16-3-1.

Youngstown is off until Tuesday night when they face the first place in the Northeast Division Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Face-off is scheduled for 8:05 PM (EST).
