Corpus Christi Rayz captain Bernie John has been voted to the 2006 Central Hockey League Southern Conference All-Star Starting Lineup, the league announced Friday afternoon. John was named as one of six Southern Conference starters and will be appearing in his sixth consecutive CHL All-Star Game next month. The 2006 CHL All-Star Game will be held at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, TX - home to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees - on Wednesday, January 18th. John is currently second in Southern Conference scoring among defenseman, and second overall on the Rayz with 26 points.
John, 33, is in his second year with the Rayz, and 13th professional season. Last season, en route to being named Best Offensive Defenseman in the league, John was the leading CHL vote getter for the 2005 All-Star Game. This year he has tallied seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 26 games. The Sudbury, Ontario native has been one of the CHL's more popular players since joining the league in 1999. He has been nominated for the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman in each of the last two seasons, and won the award in 2004. With 322 career assists in the CHL, John ranks 14th among the league's all-time leaders in assists.
John joins Serge Dube (Laredo Bucks) as the two Southern Conference starting defenseman. Starting forwards include Daymen Bencharski (Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees), Jeff Bes (Laredo Bucks) and Derek Hahn (Amarillo Gorillas). Odessa Jacakalopes goaltender, Mike Gorman was voted as the starting goaltender.
The starting lineup for the Northern Conference includes forwards Joe Blaznek (Wichita Thunder), Jeff Christian (Youngstown SteelHounds), F Greg Pankewicz (Colorado Eagles), D Derek Landmesser (Memphis RiverKings), D Brad Williamson (Colorado Eagles), and G Paulo Colaiacovo (Colorado Eagles). The All-Star starting lineups were voted upon by CHL Head Coaches and select media members. All additional All-Star selections will be made by Southern Conference Head Coach, Terry Ruskowski of the Laredo Bucks and will be announced on Tuesday afternoon, January 3rd.
