Colorado Defeats Youngstown 6-3

LOVELAND, CO- The Colorado Eagles swiftly defeated the Youngstown SteelHounds 6-3 Friday night in front of the 77th consecutive regular season sellout crowd at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado has now won 14 of their last 17 (14-2-1) games and continues to pace the Central Hockey League with a record of 22-6-1. Ryan Tobler had two goals and an assist and Erik Adams added three assists in the Eagles fourth straight victory. Goaltender Paulo Colaiacovo also won his fourth straight game and league-leading 16th win of the season proving why he is the starting goaltender for the Northern Conference in this year's CHL All-Star Game. SteelHounds forward Chris Richards had two of his club's three goals as the SteelHounds record fell to 11-17-1. Only 19 seconds into the first period, Garrett Larson tipped in a slap shot off the stick of Erik Adams that went through Youngstown goaltender David St. Germain's legs giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Eagles added to their lead at the 5:30 mark of the period on Ryan Tobler's second shorthanded goal of the season, both have which have come against the SteelHounds. Sean Robertson picked up a turnover went in on a two-on-one, drew the defense to him and dished to Tobler to take the 2-0 lead. That would be all the scoring in the first period.

Youngstown forward Chris Richards cut the lead in half on a goal that went through traffic and hit the inside of Eagles' goaltender Paulo Colaiacovo's right leg. He was assisted by Jeff Christian and Jonathan Gagnon. At the 7:48 mark, Eagles defenseman Aaron Grosul scored his first goal of the season on a blast from the right circle that went in just under the crossbar. Grosul became the final Eagles skater to register a goal this season. Youngstown again fought back on another goal by Chris Richards at the 10:21 mark of the period, a five-on-three goal that cut the lead to 3-2. That would be the closest the SteelHounds would be for the rest of the night.

The Eagles scored the next two goals, one from Ryan Tobler to close out the second and one from Scott Polaski in the third, both of which were power play goals for Colorado. Youngstown forward Chris Schaffer tallied his third goal of the season at the 11:26 mark of the third period to slim the Eagles lead to 5-3, but again the Eagles answered with the final goal of the night, another power play goal from Fraser Filipic. His goal completed the Gordie Howe hat trick for Filipic, his second such feat of the season.

The Eagles finished 3-8 on the power play against Youngtown's 1-9. In two games, Colorado has killed all but one of the 22 SteelHounds' power plays.
