Spokane Chiefs News Release
Three Chiefs Invited to World Junior Championship Selection Camps Anderson-Dolan, Smith and Kral hope to represent their countries in top tournament
Spokane Chiefs Jaret Anderson-Dolan (Canada), Ty Smith (Canada) and Filip Kral (Czech Republic) have each been invited to their respective under-20 national team selection camps, as announced by Hockey Canada and the Czech Ice Hockey Association on Monday. The camps act as precursors for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, which begins on Dec. 26 in Vancouver and Victoria, B.C.
Anderson-Dolan began the 2018-19 regular season with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, who selected him in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, recording one assist in five games. He was reassigned to Spokane in late October and scored two goals in two games before suffering a wrist injury that has kept him sidelined since. In 214 career WHL games, the 19-year-old Calgary native has 95 goals and 100 assists for 195 points.
Anderson-Dolan captained the Canadians at the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship in Slovakia and was an alternate captain for the gold-medal winning Team Canada at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek, B.C.
Smith, 18, hopes to make Team Canada as an underage after a quick start to the 2018-19 WHL regular season. The smooth-skating rearguard leads all WHL defensemen in scoring with 36 points (3G-33A) and now has 143 career points (22G-121A) in 161 GP. He was selected in the first round (17th overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.
Smith has worn the "C" for Canada multiple times, including at 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship, 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (silver) and 2016 Youth Winter Olympic Games (silver). He wore an "A" for Team Canada at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup as the Canadians won gold.
Kral, who was the Chiefs' second-round (78th overall) pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft, competed with the Czechs at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, scoring one goal in seven games. The Czechs were a surprise at the tournament, defeating Finland in the quarterfinals on their way to a strong fourth-place finish.
Now in his second season with Spokane, Kral was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Since returning from an upper body injury that sidelined him early in the 2018-19 WHL regular season, he has three goals, four assists and a +5 rating in 13 games played. Kral has 42 points (12G-30A) since making the transition to the WHL.
