Thrashers Assign Defenseman McCarthy to Wolves

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired defenseman STEVE McCARTHY from the Anaheim Ducks, and assigned him to the Chicago Wolves.

The 28-year-old blueliner was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with their first choice, 23rd overall, in the 1999 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He has amassed 55 points (17G, 38A) in 302 career NHL games, which includes notching 33 points (12G, 21A) in 117 games with the Thrashers from 2005 to 2008, and 16 points (3G, 13A) in 134 outings with the Blackhawks from 1999 to 2003. He also recorded six points (2G, 4A) in 51 outings with the Vancouver Canucks during the 2005-06 campaign.

The Trail, British Columbia, native spent last season in Russia, where he appeared in 18 contests with Salavat Yulayev Ufa (KHL), recording 16 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, McCARTHY spent four seasons in the Western Hockey League (1996-2000), where he amassed 128 points (43G, 85A) in 154 games with Edmonton and Kootenay.
