September 25, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

With the hockey season now underway and summer having given way to fall, we wanted to make sure that you get plenty of opportunities to meet all of the new Silvertips (plus plenty of the veterans). We'll be hosting three events in October that will allow terrific access to the players, starting with a night jointly held by the Silvertips and the Silvertips Booster Club on Wednesday, October 8th, at Alligator Soul, located at 3121 Broadway in Everett. At this event, you can receive information about the Silvertips Booster Club, converse with the players, and get autographs to add to your collection. More information will come shortly; check www.everettsilvertips.com for up-to-date info.

The Silvertips will also be hosting a World Series Party towards the end of October, with the date yet to be determined. This event will be held at Sporty's Beef and Brew, located at 6503 Evergreen Way in Everett, and will feature a food special as well as the enormous projection screen airing the game.

To top it all off, we're going to be holding our first annual Silvertips Costume Party on Thursday, October 30th at Alligator Soul, featuring Lincoln and several members of this year's team. This event is geared towards many of the younger Silvertips fans, and will feature an opportunity to join Lincoln's Kids Club. Make sure to come dressed up in costume, as the 'Tips will be giving away prizes for the best costumes of the night!

Again, please check upcoming This Week In Silvertips Hockey newsletters as well as www.everettsilvertips.com over the next month for more detailed information, including hours and the players who will be attending.

We can't wait to see you around town in October!

Silvertips Turn to Yoga for Advanced Conditioning

It was a drill that may have raised some eyebrows during the earlier years of the Western Hockey League: The sight of 25 young men, devoid of any easily accessible signs of desire or personality save for their own fierce determination, united in mangled poses as they contort their shapes in a method to aid their flexibility and endurance. We're not at Venice Beach, and this isn't some sort of new- age, flavor-of-the-month type of feel-good workout.

These are the Everett Silvertips, and they're doing yoga.

Featuring flexibility exercises much older than the game of hockey itself, the Silvertips are taught to recognize the limits of their body, and to acknowledge that every muscle in the body is interconnected. Though their workout regimen features near-daily weightlifting and core exercises, yoga has become an excellent supplement to aid flexibility while also re-energizing their more traditional workouts, as Jesse Burt was quick to find out.

"It's a little bit different than going into the gym and doing weight training. You're kind of flexing in different ways. Your body's not used to it, so you're sore the next day, but I think it's a great experience to go and do that," Burt said.

Most of the exercises the Silvertips participated in are designed to enhance realization of the body through various poses that are strung together, accompanied by proper breathing techniques. This effort allows players to raise the ceiling on their limitations, potentially giving them a leg up on their WHL counterparts.

"What I think Yoga brings to everybody, especially athletes, is a deeper awareness of their body and how it moves through space," certified YogaFit instructor Kwesi Coleman of Everett Physical Therapy's Sports Performance Center explained. "It also, because of the nature of yoga, really focuses on moving the body with the breath. In sport, goals are external; so the effort is to push our bodies in the most effective, efficient patterns in order to accomplish that goal. However, in yoga there is no such external goal. By decreasing the competitive environment we allow the individual to focus on development of an internal awareness, creating a sense of harmony or balance that will significantly enhance their lives, and by extension, their sport."

Of course, one common phrase after a goaltender makes a terrific sprawling save is that he has a "slinky for a spine", which actually carries more truth than it would seem. Good goalies are hailed for their flexibility and reflexes, so it should come as no surprise that Shayne Barrie was singled out by his teammates for being particularly adept at incorporating this new training method. "Being a goalie, flexibility is important, so I'm glad all the guys complimented me on my flexibility. That's a good asset for a goalie to have," Barrie said.

Athletic Trainer Chris Walker has been responsible in finding innovative ways to build muscle, flexibility and endurance, preaching the value of yoga's tangible benefits, a practice he would like to see continued.

"We use a lot of training techniques here with the Silvertips, and our partnership with Everett Physical Therapy allows us to use their sports performance center," Walker explained. "Kwesi is someone who's there and accessible to us, and yoga's just another way for the guys to see where they can grow and progress in their training. It's a tool we'll probably use again in the future."

Watch WHL Games from the Comfort of Your Own Computer

The 2008-09 Western Hockey League season is here, and you won't have to miss a moment of exiting hockey action with WHL WEB TV, which allows hockey fans to watch their favorite team in action live from their computer.

The WHL and its broadcast partner INSINC will carry all 792 WHL Regular-Season games during the 2008-09 season on WHL WEB TV, meaning fans won't have to miss a single goal, save or bone-crunching hit from their favorite team, whether at home or on the road.

"We are happy to be in a position, through our partnership with INSINC, to continue to broadcast all WHL games live on the internet. This service allows us to deliver every WHL game to our loyal fans, parents and family members, media and scouts on a worldwide basis," commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison.

All WHL Regular-Season games are available live on WHL WEB TV on a broadband pay-per-view basis with individual game, monthly pass and season pass packages available. Archived games are also available on WHL WEB TV. Fans can also take advantage of a Live and On-Demand package for all live and archived WHL games.

Silvertips fans last year purchased more WHL WEB TV packages than fans of any other team in the league. We hope that all the diehards out there continue this trend, and represent Everett as a mean, green hockey town. Remember, You're In Silvertips Country!
