Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - A three-goal third period propelled the Mississippi RiverKings to a 4-1 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Tuesday night at the CenturyTel Center. The game was tied at one before Mississippi's third-period outburst, which helped give them a five-point division lead over Bossier-Shreveport with their ninth consecutive win. The Mudbugs are still 5-2 against the RiverKings this year after the loss.
Travis Clayton scored the first goal of the game for the âBugs and Jon Horrell did all he could to keep them in the game, making 43 saves in all as Bossier-Shreveport was outshot by a 47-22 margin.
After an unsuccessful first powerplay of the game, the Mudbugs took a 1-0 lead on their second man-advantage. The puck came loose after a scrum along the boards and came to Travis Clayton, who moved in unchecked towards the net and beat Kevin Beech just inside the far post to put the âBugs on top. Bossier-Shreveport then killed off Mississippi's first two powerplays before the RiverKings answered on their third advantage of the night. Andrew Lackner set up in the high slot and fired a slapshot just under the crossbar to tie the game at one with less than two minutes left in the opening period.
Mississippi controlled much of the second, generating multiple scoring chances and outshooting the Mudbugs 20-8. Jon Horrell made a number of key saves in the period though, helping the âBugs to kill off another powerplay and hold off the RiverKings to keep the score tied at one after 40 minutes.
Mississippi scored the go-ahead goal early in the third when Joe Markusen's long wrist shot made it through a screen in front and over Horrell's shoulder at 2:25. The âKings extended the lead when Matt Summers' centering pass from the corner bounced off the skate of Tyrel Lucas and into the net to make it 3-1 at the 8:17 mark. Dallas Steward finished off the Mississippi win, poking the puck in after a scrum in front of the net to provide the final 4-1 margin.
Jon Horrell drops to 12-4-2 in defeat despite the 43-save effort, while Kevin Beech stopped 21 of 22 Mudbugs shots to get his CHL-best 31st win of the year. Both teams finished 1 for 6 on the powerplay in the game.
The Mudbugs will now have two days off before facing the Wichita Thunder on Friday night at the CenturyTel Center at 7:05 pm. They will then get another shot at the RiverKings on Saturday night at home. Tickets for both games are available now. Individual seats are on sale through Ticketmaster at 318-741-9700 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Group and flex ticket packages are available through the Mudbugs office inside CenturyTel Center or by calling 318-752-BUGS.
