Lancaster Stormers News Release
For the second straight night, the third inning was toxic to the Lancaster Barnstormers.
York scored four runs in the bottom of the third on Saturday evening and blanked the Barnstormers, 4-0, as Lancaster lost its seventh consecutive game.
The four-run surge began with a full count walk to Cody Johnson from Derrick Loop (1-4). Manny Mayorson bunted back toward the mound. Loop looked toward second but opted to throw toward first. Nobody appeared at the bag until the last second, but Loop hit Daryle Ward with a throw. Mayorson was ruled safe at first. Ward and manager Butch Hobson argued the call to no avail.
Loop threw a wild pitch with Ruddy Yan at the plate, advancing the runners to second and third with nobody out. Yan pushed one run across with a grounder to short. Eric Patterson walked, and Wilson Batista produced a second run with a single lined to center. The Revs pulled off a double steal. Andres Perez beat out a dribbler up the third base line to load the bags, and Andy Marte completed the scoring for the night with a two-run double off the "Arch Nemesis." Loop fanned the next two hitters.
York only had one runner reach base outside of the third inning, a double to right by Mayorson in the seventh. Loop worked the first six innings, yielding three hits and two walks while striking out five.
The Barnstormers totaled six hits and also drew three walks but never applied huge pressure to the York staff. Pedro Liriano (3-2) sedated the Barnstormers hitters over the first five innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out only two on 103 pitches. Lancaster managed to get Jerry Owens to third on an infield single, steal and error in the third. The next inning, singles by Travis Denker and Matt Spencer placed runners at the corners with two outs, and Lancaster put two more runners on base in the fifth.
Lancaster's best chance to score came in the ninth when Olmo Rosario led off with a double to left center off Michael Wuertz. The right-hander picked up three quick outs with Rosario pinned at third and an 0-5 second half record pinned on the Barnstormers.
The series concludes on Sunday at 5:00. Lancaster will head into the All-Star Break with Lenny DiNardo (4-4) on the hill against right-hander Brett Tomko (2-6). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 4:45.
NOTES: Blake Gailen was 1-for-3, extending his hitting streak to 13 games...Owens stretched his latest streak to seven...Lancaster was shut out for the eighth time this season...Prior to the game, infielder Kyle Haines was activated...The switch hitter batted .239 for the Barnstormers in 42 games in 2012.
