Kansas City Mavericks News Release
RAPID CITY, South Dakota - Sebastien Thinel recorded his 700th and 701st Central Hockey League (CHL) points on a goal and an assist and the Missouri Mavericks (27-15-4) earned a three-game sweep over the Rapid City Rush (24-16-4) Friday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. Thinel became the seventh player in CHL history to record his 700th point in the Mavericks' 3-2 victory. defenseman Dave Pszenyczny notched a pair of goals as the Mavs held on for their fifth straight victory. Ed McGrane also had a multiple-point game with two assists and he extended his team-high point streak to nine games. The Mavericks will now travel home for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18 at Independence Events Center.
"That is the best three-game set we've played all season," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "The last time we had a big test we failed against Quad City, but this time we exceeded expectations against a good Rapid City team."
The teams skated to a scoreless first period and there were only a total of eight shots. Rapid City outshot the Mavericks 5-3.
The Rush took the lead early into the second period when Colin Circelli got behind the Mavericks' defense and beat goaltender Charlie Effinger over the blocker. The breakaway goal was assisted by Kelly Czuy and Michael Couch.
Sebastien Thinel recorded his 700th CHL point on a goal at the 8:10 mark of the second period and he tied the game at 1-1. He became just the seventh player in the 20-year history of the CHL to record 700 points. Thinel was assisted by Ed McGrane and John-Scott Dickson.
Mavericks' defenseman Dave Pszenyczny scored his two goals just over one minute apart in the second period as he gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead. First, at the 10:15 mark, Pszenyczny lifted a shot over the shoulder of Rush goaltender Danny Battochio on assists from McGrane and Thinel. He then scored a shorthanded goal when he banged home a rebound at the 11:19 mark on an assist from Patrick Schafer. The shorthanded goal was the second such goal in as many nights for the Mavericks, and it sent Battochio to the bench in favor of Rush goaltender Tim Boron.
The Rush battled back in the third period and scored a power play goal midway through the final frame to cut the Mavericks' lead to 3-2. Mike Vaskivuo netted a power play goal on a cross-ice pass from Shawn Limpright. Riley Weselowski earned the second assist on the play, but that was as close as the home team would get.
Effinger stopped 18 of 20 shots for his fifth straight victory. Missouri went scoreless on three power play chances and the Rush finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Missouri will head home for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18. Cameron Hughes will be in attendance on February 17, and the Mavericks will celebrate Ladies Night on February 18.
