Sundogs Come Back for Shootout Win

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Craig Macdonald's two goals in the third period forced overtime and Kevin Petovello tallied the shootout-winner as the Arizona Sundogs came from behind on Friday night to top the Bloomington Blaze for a 5-4 win at US Cellular Coliseum.
Macdonald's third period goals gave him a hat trick for the game -- at the rink he used to call home when he played for the Bloomington PrairieThunder from 2009-2011. He finished with four points on the night.
Kevin Petovello's sixth-round goal was the shootout and game-winning goal. Macdonald also scored for Arizona and Brodie Sheahan for Bloomington in the shootout.
Macdonald's hat trick came with just 36 second left in regulation after the Sundogs pulled the goaltender for a 6-on-4 power play. He buried a loose puck in the goal crease during a scrum in front of the net. Jason Dale had given the Blaze a 4-3 lead on a wrist shot from the right circle with 5:37 to play in the contest - less than a minute after Macdonald tied the game for Arizona.
Doug Krantz also scored for the Blaze in the third.
Mike Spillane earned his first win in net for the Sundogs with a 32-save night. Zane Kalemba took the loss, stopping 24.
Both teams traded first period goals as Luke Popko put the Blaze on the board first before Craig Macdonald responded for Arizona.
It was a similar second period as Brodie Sheahan put the Blaze in front 2-1 midway through the frame before Adam Smyth tied the game back up for Arizona with 1:17 left to play. Craig Macdonald picked up the assist on the 3-on-2 rush for his second point of the night.
Arizona finished 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Blaze went 0-for-6.
The Arizona Sundogs continue their three-game weekend Saturday when visit the Quad City Mallards. Game time is set for 6:05 PM MST.
