Connecticut Sun News Release

UNCASVILLE, CT. (May 14, 2008) ¡X The Connecticut Sun announced today that it has extended the contract of head coach Mike Thibault and assistants Scott Hawk and Bernadette Mattox through 2009, with a team option for the 2010 season.

Terms were not released.

"I;m excited to continue the relationship that has been built here with Mohegan Sun and the Connecticut Sun," Thibault said Wednesday. "I work for, and with, great people who have supported us in our efforts to have the best organization in the WNBA, and to win a championship. I truly enjoy getting up to go to work every day, and it¡¦s nice to know the people here will continue to support us."

Thibault is the only coach in Connecticut Sun history, taking over in 2003, when the franchise relocated from Orlando. During his tenure, the Sun are 106-64 with five straight playoff appearances, four trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and consecutive runs to the WNBA Finals in 2004 and 2005. The Sun are 106-64 in the regular season under Thibault, the best mark in the league over that span.

¡§We believe strongly in the philosophy of Mike and his coaching staff,¡¨ Connecticut Sun General Manager Chris Sienko said. ¡§They have been together since 2003, and I think the players who have worn the Sun uniform have benefited from their knowledge of the game. We have been a consistent winner, and we believe we will eventually achieve our goal of winning a championship under their guidance.¡¨

Thibault brought a distinguished resume to the Sun that included extensive experience at every level. He was an assistant with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers in 1980, and he also won a CBA title with the Omaha Racers. He has been an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle Sonics and the Chicago Bulls, and is currently an assistant coach on the United States Women¡¦s National Team that will compete for a gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The Connecticut Sun will open its sixth season of play on May 17th by hosting the Atlanta Dream in Mohegan Sun Arena. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale now and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX (786-8499).
