THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS...

The Syracuse Crunch led the season series against the Maple Leafs in 2003-04. The Crunch had a 5-3-0-0 record in eight games last year and lead the all-time series with an 18-10-0-0 record... The Crunch will host the Maple Leafs in their home opener this Friday while St. John's will host Syracuse the following Thursday in the teams final home opener at Mile One Stadium... On October 8, the Syracuse Crunch announced that right wing Ben Knopp, left wing Shawn Limpright, goaltender Andrew Penner, left wing Janne Jokila and center Tyler Kolarik have been assigned to Dayton (ECHL). The Crunch also announced that they assigned center Brian Gornick to San Diego.

The Portland Pirates will host the Maple Leafs this Saturday in their home opener and Sunday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Centre... The Maple Leafs led the 2003-04 season series with a 3-1-0-0 record while Portland leads the all-time series record against St. John's with a 35-20-7 record... The Portland Pirates concluded their pre-season schedule with a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins, in front of 2,556 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday, October 8. The Pirates completed their exhibition schedule with a perfect 4-0 record. In the Pirates' four pre-season games the Pirates only trailed their opponents for 1:49, which came in the first period against the Bruins.

LEAFLETS...

-The Maple Leafs arrived in St. John's Sunday and will host their 11th Annual Golf Tournament October 12th.

- The Baby Leafs finished their preseason schedule Saturday with a 5-1 loss to the Rochester Americans.

- St. John's will start the season on a three-game road trip with one game against Syracuse and two against Portland.

- The Maple Leafs are 4-9-0 when starting the season on the road. The team is 8-5-0 in its home openers.

- The team's corporate partner OZFM will launch the "Seasons To Remember" radio promotion Tuesday, Oct. 12. The contest will run until Opening Night October 21.

MAPLE LEAFS TO WATCH...

Brad Leeb (F): Leeb has more goals (59) the past two seasons than any other Maple Leaf on the roster and will be expected to lead the team this season.

Kyle Wellwood (F): Last Season's AHL rookie Scoring Champ returns for his sophomore season. Wellwood will be out to prove last season wasn't a one year deal.

Carlo Colaiacovo (D): Colaiacovo will be one of the team's offensive threats this season. Avoiding any injuries Colaiacovo could lead all AHL defence in points.

Marc Moro (D): Marc Moro will be entering his third season with the Maple Leafs and will be expected to lead the team through his work ethic on and off the ice.

Jay Harrison (D): This is Jay's 3rd season in St. John's. Harrison had 9 points (4G,5A) and 141 PIMs last season.

NEXT WEEK'S OPPONENTS...

The St. John's Maple Leafs will host the Syracuse Crunch in their final home opener after 14 seasons in the American Hockey League. The game will be broadcast LIVE on Rogers Television, Radio NL (930AM) and www.sjmapleleafs.ca. The game starts at 7:35pm (NT).

LEAFS FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES...

Annual Charity Golf Classic –

The Annual Charity Golf Classic is held prior to the start of each hockey season. The tournament provides a unique experience with Newfoundland's only professional sports team as golfers have the opportunity to tee off with Coach Doug Shedden and the entire Maple Leafs hockey team. Funds raised go to the Leafs Foundation in support of local charities. Last years event raised a total of $24, 561. This season's tournament will take place October 12 @ Clovelly Golf Course.

Annual Leafs Wives' Charity Carnival –

Each season, the players' wives, with the assistance of the Maple Leafs Community Relations department, hosts a charity carnival with the proceeds benefiting local charities. The carnival provides the teams' fans with an opportunity to get up close and personal with their favorite players and to interact with them during a fun filled afternoon in a unique environment. Over $250,000 has been raised since the first Wives' Carnival in 1995, with last season's event on March 7, 2004 totaling $27, 292 for charity. This Year's Charity Carnival will take place December 12/04 at Mile One Stadium.

Education Programs –

The St. John's Maple Leafs know the importance of education and have designed several programs to assist local schools. Goin' for Goals and Read with the Leafs are two examples of programs that encourage children to pursue academics and achieve to the best of their ability. Throughout the season St. John's Maple Leafs Players and Buddy the Puffin can be found visiting many local schools. THIS WEEK IN LEAFS HISTORY...

October 12, 1991 - Leafs record first point in franchise history, battling the Binghamton Rangers to a 2-2 tie at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

October 16, 1991 - Leafs trim the Hershey Bears 3-1 to pick up their first franchise victory. Mike Stevens scores a first period shorthanded goal from Kevin McClelland that stands as the game winner, while Damian Rhodes kicks out 41 shots to preserve the win.
