Texas Legends Down Energy 119-114 in South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS - The Texas Legends' Justin Dentmon scored 38 points, handed out 13 assists and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Texas past the Iowa Energy 119-114 Thursday night at the NBA D-League Showcase.

Texas jumped out to a 24-6 lead and controlled the first three quarters of the game by dominating the rebounding battle with Iowa. The Legends led 85-73 heading into the 4th quarter.

Iowa coach Nick Nurse switched to a five guard lineup, and the Energy responded. Iowa went on a 19-6 run in the 4th quarter to take a 99-96 lead with only 3:31 remaining in the game. Several minutes later, with Texas up one, Curtis Stinson fouled Texas' Kelvin Lewis on the 3-point attempt. Lewis knocked down all three foul shots to put Texas up 109-105.

Stephon Hannah, the Energy's backup point guard, drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one. But each time Iowa got close, Texas would respond. Lewis answered Hannah's 3-pointer with one of his own to give the Legends the lead for good. Texas made all seven of their free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory.

Othyus Jeffers led Iowa with 25 points, but only made 3-of-10 from the free throw line. As a team Iowa shot 16-for-28 from the stripe, while the Legends went 16-for-28. Michael Haynes had a strong game off the bench for Iowa with 22 points, and Curtis Stinson finished with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go with six rebounds and five assists.

Lewis added 28 points, and Joe Alexander, the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and two blocks for Texas, which had four players log at least 40 minutes.

Texas outrebounded Iowa 51-31 in the game. Iowa falls to 16-7 on the season while Texas improves to 10-9.
