SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 13, 2011 - Put it in the books and alert the folks back in Frisco. The Texas Legends, owned by Donnie Nelson and coached by Nancy Lieberman, won their first NBA Development League Showcase game, defeating the Iowa Energy 119-114 behind a scintillating performance from Justin Dentmon, who finished with 38 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

Kelvin Lewis added 28 points, and Joe Alexander, the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and two blocks for Texas, which had four players log at least 40 minutes.

"I just really wanted to come and control the tempo and get us going early," said Dentmon, who went undrafted out of Washington in 2009. "Coach has been on me to be more a vocal leader, and really lead this team, and I tried to do that tonight."

Somebody must have spiked Iowa's cooler with Five-Hour Energy Drink after the third quarter. A surprisingly lethargic Energy squad came out flat, trailing by 13 points after one quarter, 11 at the half and 13 after three quarters before rallying to take a 99-96 lead on a three-point play by Othyus Jeffers with 3:31 remaining in the game, before Texas regrouped and held on at the end.

Jeffers led Iowa with 25 points, but only made 3-of-10 from the free throw line. As a team Iowa shot 16-for-28 from the stripe, while the Legends went 16-for-28. Michael Haynes had a strong game off the bench for Iowa with 22 points, and Curtis Stinson was his usual solid self with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go with six rebounds and five assists.

Texas, which lost its Showcase opener to New Mexico, plays again at Reno on Saturday. Iowa hosts Fort Wayne on Sunday.
