Tennessee Tames Birmingham, 4-3

Hoover, AL - Kevin Rhoderick and Jefferey Beliveau combined for 4.0 scoreless IP with three strikeouts as the Tennessee Smokies (21-19, 64-46) tamed the Birmingham Barons (15-24, 55-54), 4-3, in front of 3,082 fans Thursday night at Tennessee's Smokies Park. Birmingham's five-straight losses to Tennessee marked the first series the Barons were swept this season.

The Barons took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when three-straight singles by Jose Martinez, Jake Oester and Jason Bour loaded the bases for Ross Wilson, who reached on a fielder's choice that forced Martinez out at home. Greg Paiml added a RBI single that plated Oester for the game's first run.

Tennessee captured a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the third inning after Junior Lake lined a single to left field. Following a single by James Adduci, a RBI single by Jae-Hoon Ha to left plated Lake and advanced Adduci to third base. Ty Wright lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that knocked home Adduci.

Bour lined a leadoff double in the top of the fifth inning and raced home on Wilson's RBI single to center field. On the play Wilson scampered into second on the throw to the play. Paiml's bunt single advanced Wilson to third and on a botched pickoff attempt at first base that resulted in a throwing error on Smokies starter, Brooks Raley, allowed Wilson to scamper home as the Barons took a one-run lead, 3-2.

The Smokies knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ha reached second base on a bunt single and throwing error by Oester at third base. After Rebel Ridling drew a walk, Josh Vitters lined a RBI single to right field that scored Ha for the game-tying run.

Tennessee seized a 4-3 in the sixth inning after Lake smacked a double to center field, stole third base and scored on a RBI single by Nate Samson.

Rhoderick (5-0) earned the win for the Smokies when he tossed 2.0 hitless IP with one strikeout. Beliveau (S, 2) collected the save when the reliever hurled 2.0 scoreless IP with 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Raley earned the no-decision as the Smokies starter was charged with three earned runs on 10 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.0 IP.

Justin Edwards (3-6) suffered the defeat as the Barons southpaw yielded four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 5.0 IP.

The Barons return to Regions Park Friday night to begin a five-game set with the Jackson Generals, Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Birmingham turns to right-hander Charlie Shirek (2-5, 3.53) while Jackson's starter has not been named yet.
