TODAY'S GAME: The Generals will again look for a series victory in the rubber game of the five-game set with Mississippi at Pringles Park. This is the 3rd straight series in which Jackson has played a rubber game. The Generals are looking to snap a 10-straight series skid in which they have not one a set. The last series win was taking 3 of 5 from Tennessee, June 4-8 at Smokies Park.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - The Generals bounced back Wednesday night to the tune of a 5-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves at Pringles Park. The Generals evened the series at 2-2, forcing the rubber match of the series on Thursday night. Steven Hensley gave Jackson a quality start and won his first game since July 9th. Hensley (2-6) pitched six innings for the Generals and allowed three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four. Brian Moran pitched 1.2 innings behind Hensley to get a hold and Steve Delabar earned his 12th save pitching 1.1 innings and striking out one. Aaron Shafer, just up from Single-A suffered the loss for the Braves and surrendered five runs on 11 hits. Bethel Springs, TN native Rowdy Hardy pitched 2.1 scoreless innings behind Shafer. Carlos Triunfel extended his hitting streak to nine games Thursday with a 2-for-4 game, scoring a run and driving in a run. For the fourth time this season Scott Savastano collected four hits and was 4-for-5 with two runs. Vinnie Catricala, Francisco Martinez and Brandon Bantz had two hits.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Francisco Martinez has a hit in all three games for Jackson and is batting .308 (4x13) with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Carlos Triunfel currently has a 9-game hit streak, batting .405 (15x37) with 5 runs scored, 1 home run and 3 RBI. He has also hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games, batting .368 (28x76) with 8 runs scored, 1 home run and 7 RBI. Vinnie Catricala has recorded multi-hits in 9 of his last 12 games, batting .431 (22x51) with 9 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 RBI. Scott Savastano has recorded multi-hits in 7 of his last 13 games, batting .379 (22x58) with 5 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run, and 8 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Andrew Carraway looks to snap a 2-game losing skid on the mound today in the finale against the M-Braves. Carraway last won on July 11th. Carraway ranks 5th in the league in ERA at 3.35 and 3rd in opponents batting average at .227.
SAVO THRIVING IN LEADOFF ROLE: In 8 games serving as the leadoff hitter for the Generals Scott Savastano is batting .486 (17x35), with 6 doubles and 5 RBI. His on-base average is .514 and OPS is 1.171.
GENERALS LED LEAGUE IN BATTING DURING JULY: The Generals closed the month of July with the top batting average in the league during the month at .281. Five Generals batted .300 or better in the month. In 27 games Vinnie Catricala hit .364, with 18 extra-base hits and 24 RBI; in 28 games Carlos Triunfel hit .306; in 23 games Scott Savastano batted .321 with 10 double; in 20 games James McOwen hit .300; and Rich Poythress hit .316 10 extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1983 - While warming up before the fifth inning of the Yankees 3-1 win over the Blue Jays game at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium, New York outfielder Dave Winfield accidentally kills a seagull with a thrown ball. After the game, Winfield is brought to the Ontario Provincial Police station on charges of cruelty to animals and is forced to post a $500 bond before being released. The charges will be dropped the following day.
