Tenacious Comeback Sinks Hawks
October 6, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Des Moines Buccaneers rallied from two third period deficits to edge the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-2 in a shootout Friday at Buccaneer Arema.
Trailing 1-0 at the beginning of the final period, T.J. Walsh provided the first equalizer on a low shot from the slot 7:15 into the frame. Waterloo went ahead again, but with just over five minutes to play, USHL Forward of the Week Matt Brown cashed in on a shorthanded breakaway, which ultimately led to overtime.
The Hawks spent the last 1:37 of regulation shorthanded but pushed the game to an extra frame and earned a standings point in the process. Waterloo finished four-for-four on the penalty kill by denying Des Moines during the first 23 seconds of overtime.
In the shootout which settled the issue, Brown converted the first attempt, and Walsh clinched it the next round.
The Black Hawks had established their first lead at 6:35 of the second period. Moving the puck from point to point, Ethan Szmagaj eventually found Vladislav Firstov in the right circle. The forward's quick shot found net before Roman Durny could scramble to the post at his left.
Hank Sorensen provided the offense which put the Hawks ahead again with 7:30 remaining in regulation. During a five minute power play, the veteran defenseman's low shot from the high slot eluded Durny.
Both the Buc's netminder and Waterloo's Jared Moe finished the contest with 38 saves.
The Black Hawks play the final game before their 2018/19 Young Arena debut on Saturday in Bloomington, against the Central Illinois Flying Aces at 7:07 p.m.
