Sioux City Musketeers News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - The Musketeers made the trek to Green Bay for one game against the Gamblers on Friday night, and they made it count, beating the Gamblers by a final score of 3-1 to complete the season sweep.
The Gamblers played the Musketeers tough in their first meeting in Pittsburgh, and things were no different tonight. Through much of the 1st period, neither team was able to generate many scoring chances. The Musketeers would be the first to break through though, thanks to one of their newly named alternate captains.
Matt Miller was named as one of the team's alternate captains yesterday, and it seemed to light a fire under the forward. After parking in himself in front of the net, Miller tipped a point shot past Green Bay goaltender Evan Fear to put the Musketeers up 1-0 at 12:26 into the 1st period. Levi Kleiboer had the assist on the play. The goal would be Miller's first of the season. Green Bay would then start to apply some serious pressure towards the end of the period, and hey would eventually tie things up on a rebound goal by Noah Prokop. The period would end with the teams tied at one.
In these two teams last meeting, the Musketeers managed to score in a quick 30 seconds into the game, and they got another early goal again tonight. Just 1:27 into the 2nd period, Jordan Steinmetz came streaking down the right side before firing a beautiful shot past Fear to give the Musketeers a 2-1 lead. The Musketeers could not find the back of the net the rest of the period but stayed ahead thanks to the excellent play of goaltender Ben Kraws, who had 17 saves in the period.
Sioux City came out and played their strongest period in the 3rd. After a 2nd period where the Musketeers had three penalties, Sioux City stayed out of the box in the final frame, a huge positive for a team that has had a little trouble staying out of the box this season. Marcus Kallionkieli sealed the game with an empty net goal with just six seconds to play. Final score 3-1.
The big story of the night again for Sioux City was the work of the penalty kill and goaltender Ben Kraws. The penalty kill was perfect, killing all four penalties including a 5 on 3 opportunity for Green Bay. Kraws was outstanding once again as he stopped 37 of 38 shots.
The Musketeers will now have to wait over a week before they take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in Cedar Rapids. Sioux City will then have two games in Fargo before finally coming home on October 20th to take on the Waterloo Black Hawks in the home opener.
