Blumel Has Rosy Night
October 6, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Matej Blumel scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded for a hat trick during the Waterloo Black Hawks' 5-1 Saturday night road win against the Central Illinois Flying Aces at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Blumel finished the hat trick in the third period, but it was Griffin Ness recording a key five-on-three power play tally in the opening minute of the third which pushed the Hawks to their first multigoal lead of the night. Ness scored from close range as the Hawks closed the perimeter on the shorthanded Aces.
Just over three minutes later, Blumel cashed in on a subsequent power play, benefitting from cross-ice passing by Wyatt Schingoethe and Emil Ohrvall. He finished the hat trick at 5:59, scoring unassisted on a shorthanded breakaway, with a shot up over the right shoulder of Ryan Snowden.
All of the first period scoring had come in a 33-second span. Central Illinois scored first on Sebastian Dirven's left point shot from just inside the blue line. Brock Paul's shot from the right point at the other end of the ice yielded the equalizer. With traffic near the netmouth, Paul's chance slithered through skates and past Snowden.
A power play conversion for the Hawks was the only goal of the second. All three Waterloo forwards touched the puck in quick success, leaving Blumel with an open side. He knocked in his chance on assists from Vladislav Firstov and Austen Swankler.
Logan Stein made his first start in the Black Hawks net, turning away 33 Central Illinois shots for the victory.
After four consecutive games in three different cities and two time zones, the Black Hawks play their first home game of 2018/19 at Young Arena next Saturday. The team will reveal its 2017/18 Anderson Cup championship banner while hosting the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans will receive an Anderson Cup championship souvenir pennant. It will also be Bud Light Opening "Knight" with $2 Bud Light for fans age 21 and older. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
