Teddy Bear Toss Sees Stingrays Top Atlanta 3-2 Sunday
December 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-Captain Andrew Rowe scored the game-winning goal at the 6:31 mark of the third period to earn the South Carolina Stingrays a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Gladiators Sunday at the North Charleston Coliseum. The contest was the Stingrays annual Teddy Bear Toss, and Bobby Shea's goal in the first period brought 3,077 stuffed animals flying to the ice for those in need at the Salvation Army Angel Tree.
After Brock Higgs opened the scoring for Atlanta at 7:32, Shea stuck to even the score at 10:42 of the first period. Stephan Vigier sent the puck back to Shea at the left point. The defenseman cut in and fired a wrist shot over the glove of goaltender Matt Ginn to tie the game.
The back-and-forth contest saw the Gladiators take a brief 2-1 lead as Tyler Murovich scored on a scramble in front of the South Carolina goal at 11:30 of the second period. The puck popped high up into the air and behind Stingrays goaltender Branden Komm. Murovich poked the loose puck into the goal for his seventh tally of the season.
Only five minutes later, Nick Jones tied the game at two for South Carolina. Forward Joe Devin moved the puck down the left wing and flipped a shot off the pad of Ginn. The rebound sat loose in the crease, and a falling Jones knocked the puck under Ginn's pad at 16:47.
The lone goal of the third period was the winning tally from Rowe at 6:31. In similar fashion to Jones' goal, South Carolina scored on a rebound off Ginn's pad. Colin Mulvey won a puck race and cut in down the right wing. He fired a wrist shot that Ginn stopped, but Rowe scored his third goal of the season into the open left side of the net to give South Carolina their first lead of the evening.
Komm got the win in goal for the Stingrays to improve to 3-0-0-0 on the season. He stopped 25 shots in his first game since November 7. The Stingrays outshot Atlanta 34-27.
South Carolina is back home next weekend for a pair of games against Florida on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Ticket information is available at StingraysHockey.com.
