Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO TX – The Amarillo Gorillas wasted little time in letting the Evelyn Rivers Society knowing how much they appreciate their hard work in the community.

Sam Hill's goal with just over a minute gone by in the opening period gave the Gorillas a 1-0 lead over the San Angelo Saints. That prompted hockey fans to throw new or slightly used Teddy Bears or Stuffed Animals onto the ice in support of Evelyn Rivers.

More than 1,000 Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals were collected and presented to Evelyn Rivers. It is the second consecutive year that the Gorillas have been supporting this worth-while cause. Gorillas Earlier this month, Gorillas players attended the Evelyn Rivers Society workshop and volunteered as Santa's helpers.

"It is very important that this organization be proactive in the community," said Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations Denis J. Puska. "We are so thrilled that hockey fans took time to bring out the Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals and give to the less fortunate during the holiday season.

Meantime, Amarillo Gorillas players will be visiting area hospitals this week to spread Christmas cheer to children who might be having extended stays in those facilities at this time of the year. On Wednesday, players will visit BSA Hospital, while on Thursday the players will be at Northwest Texas Hospital.

"It touches the players' hearts each year to drop by and say hi to the children and give them a little something," said Puska. "No child should be in the hospital at Christmas time."

The first place Amarillo Gorillas return to action this weekend with two home games at the Bank One Jungle in the Amarillo Civic Center. On Friday, the Gorillas host the Austin Ice Bats at 7 p.m. and then on Saturday the rival New Mexico Scorpions are in town also at 7 o'clock.
